What we are doing

COVID-19 is having a devastating impact on BAME communities in the UK, yet often the voices of those who are most affected remain unheard.

I want to make sure that the voices of BAME women are heard, their skills, knowledge, expertise and stories of lived experience recognised.

I am inviting chapter proposals for an edited book on COVID-19 and the disproportional impact on BAME communities in the UK. Once I have collated enough interest I will be submitting a proposal to publishers for an edited book.

Because of the urgency of the situation I am asking for submissions to be sent to me by 27th May 2020. Please fill out the form below and email it to me. It is a quick form (300 word summary of your idea).

It would be easier if one form is completed for each chapter (written by one academic and one non-academic together), so please try to match yourself up to and write together. Broadly, it is the academic’s role to bring in facts and research, it is the non-academic’s role to make sure the chapter stays grounded in reality and accessible to the general public (but you will probably mix up these roles in reality).

If you are unable to find a match – complete this yourself and we will try to match you. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE AN ACADEMIC! we value lived experience and different ways of knowing.

If you have a good idea we are keen to hear from you. You want to highlight the voice of BAME women, the issues that concern them and the knowledge and insights they have. We are interested to hear about issues that affect BAME women, but you can write about any issue affecting BAME communities and COVID-19 in the UK. (you do not have to be British, but you should write about the UK).

We are seeking approximately 10 chapters

Some area’s already seem popular, so write down your main idea on the form but also add other areas you may be interested in on the form, in case we have duplication.

Please return the form to addy.adelaine@gmail.com

Many Thanks
Dr. Addy

Criteria

  • Each chapter should be written by a team of at least one academic scholar and at least one non-academic scholar
  • Each chapter should focus on an issue related to COVID-19 and BAME communities
  • Authors can be from anywhere in the world, but the chapter should focus on a UK issue
  • I am keen for you to utilise your own lived experience, but the chapters do not have to be focused on women and/or gender. It is pitched as a book about COVID-19 and BAME communities written by BAME women.
  • Each chapter should draw from the research and expertise of the academic, but it should be written for a non-academic audience who do not have expert knowledge. Write as if you are explaining the issue to a non-academic friend. References will be included as a chapter footnote.
  • You can write the chapter as a dialogue between two women or as a single narrative,
  • All authors should broadly identify as BAME. We accept that the term BAME is not ideal but this terminology is used to reflect current interest. If the book proposal is accepted, we are happy to change this terminology to your preferred term.
  • All authors should broadly identify as a woman: We are happy to accept submissions from trans women or individuals who prefer to be defined as non-binary
